OpenAI Sora: 164K Downloads in Two Days and No. 3 in the US
OpenAI has launched Sora, an AI video generation app that has caused an immediate stir. Despite being invite-only and currently only available in the US and Canada, it has become No. 3 in the US App Store on its second day of release.
According to Appfigures, Sora has collected:
- 56K downloads on its first day (September 30);
- 164K in its first two days (September 30 – October 1).
How it compares
To compare with other AI apps, Appfigures only analyzed downloads in the US and Canada.
- ChatGPT — 81k downloads on the first day, top 1 on the second day.
- Gemini — 80k, top 6.
- Sora — 56k, top 3.
- Grok (xAI) — 56k, top 4.
- Claude (Anthropic) — 21k, top 78.
- Copilot (Microsoft) — 7k, top 19.
Sora started at the same level as Grok and significantly outperformed Claude and Copilot, but lost to ChatGPT and Gemini.
Demand for AI videos
Sora is positioned not only as a video generator, but also as a social platform with an algorithmic feed like TikTok. Demand was strong: even with strict access restrictions, the app made it into the top 3 of the App Store.
This confirms that users are ready to test AI video tools in a social media format, and not just as professional utilities.
